How Long Treatment Lasts

We get a lot of questions from our patients, but one of the most common is as to how long treatment actually lasts. Unfortunately, there's no one clear answer to this question. Orthodontic treatment times vary greatly from patient to patient, and they depend on the severity of the malocclusion, the method of treatment, and other factors like genetics and patient compliance. For minor issues like mild crowding or spacing, treatment can be as short as two months. But for more severe cases like extreme overbite or crossbite, treatment can take two and a half years or more. In some cases, we'll opt to use two phase treatment, which spreads the course across two distinct sessions, one when the patient is around age 7 and the other in adolescence.

Dr. Ward will perform a thorough orthodontic evaluation when you first visit us, and based on that, he'll draft up an orthodontic plan and give you an estimate for how long your course will last. Naturally, estimates vary, but on average a normal orthodontic treatment course takes between 6 and 18 months.
